The SR-71, unofficially known as the āBlackbirdā is a high speed, long range reconnaissance aircraft which first flew in December 1964. Famed for itās ability to outrun missiles, the Blackbird was capable of flying beyond Mach 3 at altitudes over 80,000 ft. On average, an SR-71 could only be flown once a week due to various lengthy and complicated pre-flight preparations. A total of 32 Aircraft were built with 12 being lost to accidents. The type was fully retired by the US airforce in 1998.
